First Look At Sonic The Hedgehog In His New Movie
Sonic The Hedgehog is "a whole new speed of hero," as promised -- and shown -- in the first teaser poster. Since we're talking about Sonic, the filmmakers wisely chose to give us a motion poster, in addition to a traditional poster, to better illustrate his moves:
The live-action Sonic The Hedgehog movie opens in November 2019, and just showed some brief footage at CCXP in Sao Paulo, Brazil. According to Collider, the footage just showed Sonic on a highway and then quickly running off screen.
Speaking of Sonic's speed, the motion poster doesn't completely tell the story of how that will be depicted in the movie. As producer Neal H. Moritz explained to IGN:
Obviously the poster can only show so much. ... That's a hint at what we're hoping to accomplish, but I think people are going to see things they've probably never seen before in trying to represent speed in this movie. We've worked so closely with the people at SEGA who are kind of the gatekeepers of Sonic to make sure we're lockstep. We're trying to make something that's for today that fans of different versions will love as well.
In the film, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) finds himself in our modern world, where he befriends James Marsden's Tom Wachowski, who helps him try to stop Jim Carrey's evil Dr. Robotnik.
Sonic The Hedgehog is being directed by Jeff Fowler, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for Gopher Broke in 2004. The filmmakers put a lot of thought into things like Sonic's fur and his shoes for the new movie. Deadpool director Tim Miller is an executive producer on the film, and he told IGN the filmmakers struggled with how to depict Sonic's eyes.

But apparently the final eye choice didn't please the video game makers. Here's more from Tim Miller on that:
I don't think SEGA was entirely happy with the eye decision, but these sorts of things you go, 'It's going to look weird if we don't do this.' But everything is a discussion, and that's kind of the goal, which is to only change what's necessary and stay true to the rest of it. He's not going to feel like a Pixar character would because I don't think that's the right aesthetic to make it feel like part of our world.
Hmm. Now I'm really curious about the eyes. In other tidbits, Tim Miller said part of the film will not take place on Earth; Neal H. Moritz added that Sonic fans can expect some Easter eggs, but they don't want to reveal too much ahead of time.
Sonic The Hedgehog also stars Natasha Rothwell, Tika Sumpter, Neal McDonough, and Adam Pally. It is currently scheduled for release in theaters on November 8, 2019. Here's what else is still playing in theaters in the few weeks left to 2018. And here's the long lineup ahead, so far, for 2019.
