What Elton John Is Doing For The Lion King Remake

Can you feel the love tonight? We bet that you can. As far as classic animated Disney movies are concerned, there are few whose soundtracks compare to that of The Lion King. The songs produced by Sir Elton John for the 1994 classic are practically untouchable for many fans, and it sounds like the legendary musician is now gearing up to add to that impressive collection of tracks. That's right, folks; Jon Favreau's The Lion King remake will include new end credits music produced by Sir Elton John himself. In a recent interview, John explained:

They need to have a new end credits song. There's going to be four of our songs in the film, from the original: 'Can You Feel The Love Tonight?' 'Hakuna Matata,' 'I Just Can't Wait To Be King' and 'Circle of Life.' And then there will be an end, closing song, and we've been speaking to Beyonce's people and hopefully Tim [Rice] and I and her can cook up something. That's going out in 2019 as well. And it will be great to work with her. So we will see.

So, if you are a fan of the classic music from The Lion King, it seems that you can look forward to four of the fan-favorite songs coming back. Having said that, Elton John will not be able just to dust off some old recordings, as Jon Favreau and the folks at Disney want him to return to for a brand-new song that will play over the film's credits. Beyond that, the new song will see him team up with Beyonce (who is providing the voice of Nala in the movie) and previous Lion King collaborator, Sir Tim Rice, per what he told The Sun.

The fact that The Lion King remake plans to bring Sir Elton John back into the fold and use many of his classic songs in the story is not necessarily that surprising. Although this is a remake, it seems that The Lion King has already found several ways to pay homage to the classic animated version and share some DNA. One element of this is the inclusion of the classic music and musicians, and another is the casting of James Earl Jones to return to his beloved role as Mufasa.

Despite all of the old and familiar mainstays returning to the fold, there are still plenty of other new elements worth getting excited about as well. In fact, CinemaBlend got a chance to screen some early footage from the film's opening scene at D23 in Anaheim, California last summer, and the sheer amount of nearly photo-realistic detail that has been injected into this story shows how much new material we can look forward to when the film finally debuts. Elsewhere in his interview, Elton John similarly praised the visual style and spectacle in the movie's opening, so it sounds like there's quite a bit for fans to start looking forward to.

Jon Favreau's live-action remake of The Lion King will debut in theaters on July 19, 2019. Jordan Vogt-Roberts has been hard at work on a script that would turn the popular Metal Gear Solid video game franchise into a big screen movie. However, it turns out that's not the only video game he has ideas for. Recently, the director of Kong: Skull Island revealed that he also has a pitch for a Metroid movie, though even he admits the likelihood of that one becoming real one day is pretty unlikely. According to Vogt-Roberts...

I have a pitch for a Metroid movie. They'll never let me do it. It's too crazy... It legitimately would be [Samus] alone. It would be a little bit of her talking to herself. As soon as they introduce other talking characters in those games, to me it loses everything. You put her alone and it's almost got a little bit more to do with the silence of a movie like Drive. Like the quietness and having it be like a real, intense mood piece, but mixed with sci-fi.

The vast majority of the Metroid video games don't have other characters of consequence other than Samus Aran, the protagonist who is controlled by the player. The games are traditionally a mix of third or first person shooting combined with platforming. As the player progresses through the alien world of the game, different weapons and items are obtained which can then be used to get to previously unreachable parts of the game world.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts tells IGN that he appreciates the isolation that comes from playing Metroid games, the feeling that you're alone in a very hostile place. He would love to make a movie that focused on that feeling of isolation. The only problem is that a movie that only had a single isolated character would have little to no dialogue, which is something most studios likely wouldn't be interested in. It's not that the movie wouldn't have people speaking, like A Quiet Place. Most Metroid games literally don't have another character for Samus to communicate with at all.

There have been games which changed up this formula, but as Jordan Vogt-Roberts says, those lose a lot. The less said about Metroid: Other M the better.

It certainly seems like getting a nearly silent Metroid movie greenlit would be a long shot at best. If you could get away with making it a small movie there might be a chance, but as the missile-blasting science fiction story that Metroid ultimately is, it would seem that a larger budget would be necessary.

Nintendo hasn't let its major properties be turned into movies since the abomination that was the Super Mario Bros. movie, but with the news that a new animated Mario Bros. movie is in development, perhaps conversations about a Metroid film could happen at some point. Though, even if that happens, it likely won't look like this.

It was always the plan for Gal Gadot to reprise Wonder Woman in Justice League following the Amazon heroine's solo movie, but with Wonder Woman proving itself to be a critical and commercial hit in the summer of 2017, DC and Warner Bros understandably moved forward to a sequel. Even before Wonder Woman 2 was officially given the green light, it was reported that rather than take place after Diana of Themyscira's adventure with Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg, it would be another prequel story, this time with the action taking place in the 1980s. That was later confirmed, and now DC president Geoff Johns has seemingly pinpointed the exact year with the below picture.

1984, the year that George Orwell's eponymous novel took its title from, and which included major events like Sally Ride being the first woman to go into space and Ghostbusters hitting theaters. This also places Wonder Woman 2 as taking place 67 years after Wonder Woman, when Diana first ventured into man's world and tried to bring an early end to World War I. What's unclear from this picture is if Wonder Woman 2 will actually be called Wonder Woman 1984 or if this just served as a fun tease. Regardless, I like that the low quality, VHS-like lines in the lettering to make it look era appropriate.

While no specific Wonder Woman 2 plot details have been revealed yet, the sequel will see Diana fighting The Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig. Game of Thrones's Pedro Pascal has also been cast in a key role. Unofficially, it's been rumored that only will Wonder Woman clash with Soviet Union forces during Wonder Woman 2, but Chris Pine will also be back. The former plot point makes since given that the Soviet Union was on its last legs during this period, but as for Pine, his character, Steve Trevor, sacrificed himself in Wonder Woman to destroy Doctor Poison's deadly gas. Granted, in comic books death isn't quite as permanent with notable characters, but even if we assume that Steve was somehow miraculously transported off that plane before it exploded, he would have died from old age before 1984. Perhaps Steve is simply appearing through flashbacks or as a hallucination, but for now, all that's guaranteed is that the DC Amazon will do battle with a ferocious cat lady.
