Why The Nightmare On Elm Street Reboot Hasn't Happened Yet, According To The Writer

The horror renaissance of recent years has seen Michael Myers and Pennywise return to theater screens, with Chucky, Jason and Candyman all on the way back in one form or another. One horror icon conspicuous in his absence is Freddy Krueger, and although Aquaman screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is attached to a reboot, it hasn't happened yet. The screenwriter addressed the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot, saying:

It's still happening. Nothing is percolating just yet. The Conjuring universe is sort of first and foremost on [New Line Cinema's] horror burner.

While not especially encouraging, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick's comments to GameSpot keep hope alive that the reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street is not dead. It simply is not a priority at the moment. The way he puts it, it doesn't sound like there is any movement or work being done on it yet, but there is still the intention to do it eventually, The Conjuring 3 is just more pressing and important for the production studio at the moment, so that's where the focus is.

David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is scripting the third installment in the successful Conjuring series, which will be directed by Michael Chaves. So perhaps once he is done with that, things can start moving forward on A Nightmare on Elm Street. However, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is also attached to Dungeons & Dragons and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, so he has a fair bit on his plate.

That said, he realizes that the desire is there and that means that sooner or later, this franchise will return, as he says:

Everybody wants to see Freddy again I think, so I think it's inevitable at some point

On that point, it is hard to disagree. The last attempt to reboot the franchise was 2010's A Nightmare on Elm Street, and that film was viewed as a disappointment. But in recent years, horror icons have been making big comebacks in financially and critically successful films. Freddy is one of the (if not the most) recognizable horror icons, so his return to our dreams and theater screens seems inevitable.

Given the success of the genre and films like this year's Halloween, it is frankly somewhat surprising that A Nightmare on Elm Street isn't a priority at New Line. With a major horror franchise at its disposal, you would think that New Line would want to strike while the horror genre is hot and fast track a high quality reboot.

But I guess something has to come first and The Conjuring franchise is more of a known and reliable commodity at this point, and with good reason. The franchise has just had its biggest success to date with The Nun and has grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide overall.

A Halloween-style refresh for Freddy could be huge and given the recent success of both new, original horror and reboots and remakes of classic properties, the time has never been more right for Freddy to make a comeback. Despite that, for now it seems like we'll have to wait at least a while longer for a reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Back in 2013, the release of Martin Scorseses The Wolf of Wall Street was the smash hit that not only made a cultural impact on pop culture, it also made a huge splash with critics as well. But the financing that went into the film came into question not too long after, as investor 1Malaysia Development Berhad, 1MDB for short, became the focus of an investigation that alleged the funds granted to make the film were ill gotten goods. Now, almost six years after the films release, a key figure in the scandal is about to go on trial in connection with these charges of malfeasance.

Former Prime Minster of Malaysia Najib Razak, who was recently arrested in connection to the 1MDB scandal, is the man going on trial, as he created the sovereign wealth fund, which by intent is supposed to invest in real and financial assets globally. 1MDB was kind of like a 401(k) plan for the country of Malaysia. The intent, overall, is to enrich the country whose money is being entered into this sort of financial arrangement.

Only, as the charges mentioned by The Hollywood Reporter allege, Najib Razak abused those funds by funneling them into his own high living lifestyle, which included helping fund The Wolf of Wall Street. In addition to funding the film, the money went into celebrating it in a fashion that sounds similar to the events depicted within the film. Now, years of investigation and litigation surrounding are about to kick into high gear, as this trial is the latest step in the overall case against 1MDB and its actions.

Previously, wed learned that the U.S. Department of Justice cut a deal with Razaks stepson, and Red Granite producer, Riz Aziz, in which a $60 million settlement was paid to close off a lawsuit from the state of California. Though that settlement was legally announced as no admission of wrongdoing or guilt on the part of Red Granite Productions, so that was somewhat of a temporary reprieve in the overall matter.

Making this story all the more unbelievable is the fact that Jordan Belfort, the Wolf of Wall Street himself, had a deep seated feeling that some familiar tricks were being played behind the scenes on the film depicting his own financial crimes. But, sometimes, the truth needs to be discovered bit by bit, eventually creating a provable pattern of behavior. A pattern that now stands as proof that Najib Razak could have been the head of the most ambitious scheme in political, financial and filmmaking history.

This will definitely be a case to watch, as its a pretty large and unique incident that the world will want to avoid allowing to happen in the future. Even more interesting will be the potential fallout and reaction of producer/star Leonardo DiCaprio to this further movement of this Wolf of Wall Street scandal. At the very least, itd probably be a good idea to pay back the money that he earned for playing his part in the films production, as a gesture of good faith.

Zombieland 2 Has Cast A Brand New Character

After a decade's worth of stops and false starts, it appears that Zombieland 2 is at last on the way. The sequel is set to begin shooting in January and it will reunite the cast of Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin. At least one new face will be joining the film alongside the quartet as Zoey Deutch has been cast in Zombieland 2.

Zoey Deutch recently starred in Netflix's acclaimed romantic comedy Set it Up and also appeared in last year's The Disaster Artist. Based on the casting news, as reported by Variety, it is unknown whom the actress will be playing in Zombieland 2 at the moment. So we'll have to wait a while to get more details about her role.

Zombieland 2 will pick up with the characters in a world where many of the zombies have been wiped out, in part thanks to the double-tapping work of people like Columbus and Co. But the zombies are not gone, and the remaining ones have evolved over the years to become more dangerous and will likely require far more cardio to be prepared to deal with.

Zombieland 2 will also introduce some new human survivors to the mix and I'd expect Zoey Deutch to be playing one of them and not one of the undead. Without any further details, we're left to speculate about whom the actress might be playing and what city she will derive her Zombieland name from.

An earlier report said that the film will find Columbus, Tallahasse and Wichita attempting to rescue Abigail Breslin's Little Rock, who has run off with an unnamed and potentially dangerous character. There is also may be a character named Madison, who Columbus starts a relationship with. Perhaps one of these two characters (if they aren't the same person) is whom Zoey Deutch is playing in the film.

Whoever she's playing, Zoey Deutch had something of a breakout role on Netflix's Set it Up and she should be a great addition to this cast. While the small group feel of the first film was part of its charm, it will be nice to see the world expand out a little bit and help Zombieland 2 not just feel like a rehash of the first film.

Zombieland 2 reunites the original cast onscreen as well as the directors and writer offscreen. Venom director Ruben Fleischer returns to direct the horror/comedy and Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are back on script duties.

Zombieland 2 is set to release on October 11th of next year, coinciding with the first film's 10th anniversary. But Zombieland 2 is just one of the anticipated titles arriving in 2019, check them all out in our 2019 Release Schedule.
