Will Shazam! Connect To The Larger DC Universe? Here's What Zachary Levi Says

Shazam! is the seventh film in the DC Extended Universe, but the first trailer already showed off its unique look and tone. Star Zachary Levi answered a fan's question on whether the film stands alone or if a viewer would have to be up-to-date on all DCEU offerings. Here's his answer:

He's such a good salesman. So Zachary Levi is saying the movie works on its own, but viewing is elevated if you've seen the previous movies in the franchise. These DCEU films do tend to connect to each other, so it would be strange if there weren't Easter eggs of some kind.

We already know there was supposed to be a cameo in Shazam! from the DCEU's current Superman, Henry Cavill. We found out Cavill wasn't doing it in the same report that alleged he might be done playing Superman. (Aquaman Jason Momoa recently said Cavill isn't going anywhere.) There were rumors about what the Superman cameo was supposed to be, but either way, it's not happening.

That said, Shazam! follows Aquaman in the DCEU, and exists in the same world as the Justice League and Suicide Squad heroes/worst heroes. Shazam! is the only film the DCEU has scheduled for 2019, but at this point they have at least two coming in 2020: Birds of Prey on February 7, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020.

Will Shazam! include any nods to those upcoming movies? Shazam is the first character to not be directly connected to the others and their respective films, from Man of Steel and Batman v Superman to Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League, and Aquaman. But, as Zachary Levi said, the film will have nods to remind fans that it is set in the world of the other DC heroes.

Shazam! -- aka the other Captain Marvel -- just shared new footage at Brazil Comic-Con, and Zachary Levi got to meet some of his young fans. It's clear he's already making a big impression in the role.

Shazam! stars Asher Angel as teen orphan Billy Batson, who can magically transform into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi) by saying the magic word "Shazam." The film also stars Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, and Djimon Hounsou. Here's more of what we know about the movie so far.

Warner Bros. is opening Shazam! in theaters on April 5, 2019. It's one of the many, many films coming out in 2019. It'll have to survive the tight squeeze between the MCU's Captain Marvel on March 8 and Avengers: Endgame on April 26. Spring 2019 will be a very competitive box office season in general. We'll have to see which superheroes are truly ready to save the day.

Hocus Pocus' Thora Birch Didn't Love Her Cat Co-Star

There are many holiday fans out there for whom October 1st marks the beginning of Halloween season. And aside from the candy and costumes, this includes plenty of annual TV and movie watching. For many cinephiles, there is no Halloween movie quite as beloved Hocus Pocus. The 1993 Disney classic has gained a cult fandom in the years since its release, with every line of dialogue becoming a quotable part of the autumnal experience. American Beauty actress Thora Birch played young Dani Dennison, who was often seen looking out for magical cat Binx. But the actress actually didn't get along with her feline co-star, both machine and real. As she tells it,

Dani was in love with the cat. For me, I had an issue whenever the cat came up. There were a number of live cats, animatronic cats -- the thing with the cat was a toss-up. You never knew what would happen.

It looks like Thora Birch was never able to truly relax with Binx, despite sharing so many scenes with the talking cat. Instead, she had to either worry about the technology of the robots, or hope that she got along with the myriad live cats on set. Binx really did have nine lives.

Thora Birch's help to paint a more realistic picture of Hocus Pocus. Because its been playing on TV annually for years, the Kenny Ortega classic has a special place in viewer's hearts. The nostalgic feels and childhood memories make Hocus Pocus exciting every single Halloween, and it's hard to imagine what it was like on set. Birch was just a young girl at the time, but her memories regarding Binx seem to be clear.

Thackery Binx served as the provider of exposition for Hocus Pocus, after living as a black cat in Salem since 1693. And because it was the 90's and everyone loves talking animals, Binx was able to retain his ability to speak in cat form. Binx instantly formed a bond with Thora Birch's Dani, protecting her from the Sandersons as he couldn't with his sister Emily. But he wasn't so well put together IRL, and Thora Birch had a hard time with her cat-focused scenes in Hocus Pocus.

In her same conversation with ABC, Thora Birch also expressed how much she still loves Hocus Pocus, and cherishes her time on set as a young actress. While she went on to star in projects like American Beauty, she claims Hocus Pocus was the most fun she ever had on set. But what's not to love? There's Bette Midler, special affects, and musical numbers. And while Dani didn't end up keeping Binx as her house cat, her relationship with her brother Max ended up stronger by the film's end.

Hocus Pocus will get some new love this year, as Freeform is celebrating its 25th anniversary with the Hocus Pocus 25th Anniversary Halloween Bash. In Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is chock full of fun references and Easter eggs, there is a Times Square billboard that shows up multiple times for a fake Seth Rogen movie called Hold Your Horses. So what exactly is this movie? In an exclusive interview with CinemaBlend's Eric Eisenberg, producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller gave the rundown on the film we'd have to hop dimensions to see:

Phil Lord: Hold Your Horses is actually a sequel to an earlier Seth Rogen jockey film.Chris Miller: It's about an unlikely jockey just trying to make his way in a world of tiny people.

You have to appreciate that Phil Lord, who co-wrote the film, and Chris Miller didn't only throw in a funny movie poster, they actually gave it a backstory. Hold Your Horses is actually the second entry in what is presumably a successful comedy franchise. It looks like no matter what dimension you're in, goofy comedies get sequels.

The film's premise is hilarious and reminiscent of the kind of films our dimension got in the early 2000s starring Rob Schneider. Though in Miles Morales' universe, Seth Rogen is the one breaking ground by taking the jockey film, which has seen prestigious, dramatic entries like Seabiscuit and Secretariat, and is introducing a horse of a different color with a wacky comedy.

In Hold Your Horses, Seth Rogen, who does not have the build or frame one usually associates with a jockey, tries to chase his dream and overcome his diminutive rivals. Lest you think this was some sort of jibe at Seth Rogen, the actor is a fan and he took to Twitter to promote his cross-dimensional film projects:

That poster is so great. Seth Rogen is giving a look and gesture that conveys that he knows this is goofy, but he's just happy to be here. That's a positive attitude for his jockey to have and hopefully he finds success.

What I'm unclear on is the title. Is Riding High in the Saddle the subtitle or just the tagline for the film? Also, if this movie is strictly Hold Your Horses, what was the title of the first film? Pony Up? Get off Your High Horse? Beat a Dead Horse? No, that one's too dark. Actually, if Seth Rogen's character is named Charlie... Charlie's Horse! What I'm saying is I want answers.

We may never get to see Hold Your Horses in this dimension, but maybe we'll be able to follow the franchise through future Spider-Verse films. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse already has a sequel as well as a spinoff movie in the works. And off the strength of a record-breaking weekend and near-universal positive reviews, the future is looking bright for Spidey, and hopefully, Hold Your Horses.

I really enjoyed it. Feel free to read my review, spoilers in the spoiler tag at the end. I liked the songs, and am willing to let them have some time to sink in. Someone could probably argue that the original Mary Poppins' songs just get catchier and more iconic the more you listen to them.
