MoviePass Has Warned Subscribers About All Of Its Pricing Changes

MoviePass became a major force in the movie business after dropping its price last year. Since then, however, the subscription service has made a number of changes to the service and several more have now been officially announced. Over the last several days MoviePass subscribers have been receiving an email from the company which outlines three significant new changes to the service: peak pricing, a premium showings option, and the ability to bring a guest. Peak pricing is likely the most contentious change, as it means that standard subscription price may not cover the cost of tickets going forward. According to MoviePass...

Under this plan, if the combination of demand for a title, date or part of day is higher, subscribers may be asked to pay a small additional fee depending on the level of demand. You can avoid this peak surcharge by choosing an alternative date or film. We will also soon give subscribers one "peak pass" per month, allowing them to waive a Peak Price surcharge once per month.

The "peak pass" option will be a nice feature for those that don't go to movies at traditionally busy times but might do so from time to time. However, overall, the fact that MoviePass now has Uber-like surge pricing could cause some to reevaluate the value of the service on the whole. One nice addition to this is that if you pay for your MoviePass subscription annually or quarterly, peak pricing won't come into effect until after your next renewal, so you may have several months where you won't need to worry about it.

However, there's another place where a potential additional cost to MoviePass might be better received. While traditionally, MoviePass has only offered tickets to 2D movies that are not large-format theaters, the service will soon add the ability to purchase tickets to IMAX and 3D screenings for an additional fee.

MoviePass members on any plan will soon be able to access RealD 3D, IMAX 2D or 3D, and other Premium Large Format showings of any film for an additional upgrade fee.

Of course, the one thing that MoviePass fails to disclose is how much the additional fee will be for either of these new features. As long as the additional cost is low enough to still make the MoviePass subscription pay for itself most users probably won't mind, though that, of course, depends on how frequently you use it. If a MoviePass subscription with a 3D upgrade costs more than what the ticket would normally cost you, then MoviePass only becomes worthwhile if you plan to use it more than once per month. At this point, we don't really know how often most people who have the service actually use it.

Finally, MoviePass is adding a feature that will make the service a little more convenient for users who go to the movies with friends who don't have MoviePass. The new Bring-A-Guest feature will let you purchase additional tickets via the MoviePass app. This appears to be limited to the theaters that offer e-tickets via the app, but it means you can purchase reserved seats for you and your friends all at once to be sure you're sitting together.

With new competition coming for MoviePass' market share expect to see a lot of things change in the growing business of movie subscription services. A lot of different things will be tried to see what appeals to customers as well as where these services can make money without driving customers away.

The Blunt Way Tony Gilroy Just Explained Rogue One's Reshoots

Reshoots have become a common step in the blockbuster filmmaking process, as often times it becomes necessary to regather months (or even a year) after principal photography to obtain extra footage. But sometimes reshoots are an especially big undertaking, and in the case of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a significant portion of the movie was changed during that extra filming period, including some of the beginning and most of the third act. Michael Clayton writer and director Tony Gilroy was brought in to write new material for Rogue One and oversee the reshoots, and nearly a year and a half after the movie's release, he's bluntly explained just what kind of a situation the first of the Star Wars spinoffs was in when he came on board. As Gilroy put it:

I've never been interested in Star Wars, ever. So I had no reverence for it whatsoever. I was unafraid about that. And they were in such a swamp ... they were in so much terrible, terrible trouble that all you could do was improve their position.

Those who watched Rogue One's first teaser trailer and then compared it to later previews will remember that the movie went through a number of changes following the summer of 2016, from Saw Gerrera being given hair to Jyn Erso no longer having to face down a TIE Fighter. Although Godzilla's Gareth Edwards directed Rogue One during the main shoot, it was Tony Gilroy who spearheaded the reshoots, and judging by his comments during his appearance on The Moment with Brian Koppelman podcast, it was up to him to drag the movie out of a "swamp," so to speak. Edwards was ultimately credited as Rogue One's director, while Gilroy easily scored a screenplay credit, but make no mistake, without Gilroy's involvement, the movie would have looked a lot differently.

During the interview, Tony Gilroy also noted that the "gumption, the balls" of Disney, company CEO Bob Iger and everyone else at the Mouse House, involved to gamble on the movie the way they did was "astonishing," and because he came much later into the creative process and didn't have any strong attachment to the Star Wars franchise, he didn't stress as much about working on it as he would have on his other projects. Gilroy also talked about the movie's ending, specifically with all the main protagonists being killed off. including Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor, who actually survived in an alternate ending. Gilroy explained:

If you look at Rogue, all the difficulty with Rogue, all the confusion of it ... and all the mess, and in the end when you get in there, it's actually very, very simple to solve. Because you sort of go, 'This is a movie where, folks, just look. Everyone is going to die.' So it's a movie about sacrifice.

It's unlikely we'll ever see what the original version of Rogue One looked like, but Disney and Lucasfilm clearly made a good decision having Tony Gilroy make the changes that he did. The movie received a strong critical reception (it ranks at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes), and it made over $1 billion worldwide. However, don't expect Gilroy to work on another Star Wars movie, as the franchise still doesn't particularly appeal to him. The reason Rogue One worked for him is because he saw it more as a "Battle of Britain movie."

The Star Wars franchise continues next month with the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story on May 25, and Episode IX will conclude the current trilogy when it drops on December 20, 2019.

Avengers: Infinity War's Final Trailer Gives Us The Closest Look At Thanos' Black Order

It is a very exciting time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio is still riding the high of Black Panther's massive box office and critical success, with the next MCU installment being one of the biggest films of all time. Avengers: Infinity War will arrive next month, uniting every major character in the battle against Josh Brolin's Thanos. But Thanos isn't invading the planet alone, as he'll have help in the form of his terrifying Black Order. The Black Order is one of the most mysterious aspects of Infinity War, but luckily the fantastic final trailer changed that. We got our best look at the group of villains, and it looks like the heroes are going to have their hands full.

The best look at the Black Order comes midway through the trailer, revealing that the group captures Tom Hiddleston's Loki sometime during the film's runtime. Loki took the Tesseract out of Asgard before its destruction in Thor: Ragnarok, which puts him on Thanos' list of targets once he comes looking for the Infinity Stones. By the look of the quartet of new characters, Loki doesn't have much hope in fighting back or escaping.

On the left side of Loki we can see the character Proxima Midnight, who is the only female of the group. Proxima is Thanos' most adept fighter, and is absolutely deadly with the spear that is currently aimed at Loki's head. It's currently unclear who is playing the villain, as the makeup makes her almost undistinguishable. Loki is flanked on the other side by Corvus Glaive, another one of Thanos' children. Corvus is immortal while wielding his weapon, so the Avengers are going to have to separate him from it in order to take him down.

This scary guy is none other than Ebony Maw, another one of Thanos' Black Order that gets a special moment in the final trailer. He'll be played by actor Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, and it seems like Doctor Strange is his target during Infinity War. Ebony Maw no doubt is attempting to procure the the Eye of Agamotto aka the Time Stone from the good doctor. This may be what gets Doctor Strange involved in the conflict against Thanos, and we're also shown him collaborating with the likes of Spider-Man and Star-Lord throughout the course of the trailer.

The big guy in the Black Order is Black Dwarf, who is anything but. He'll be the big hitter of the group, and in the comics he's the first member of the Order to travel to Wakanda. It's unclear if that storyline will continue in the film, as Wakanda is the setting for the biggest battle in MCU history. Maybe Black Dwarf originally gets his ass handed to him, before he rallied the troops to invade the technologically advanced country.
