Shazam!s Mark Strong Is Still Bummed About The Green Lantern Movie

Mark Strong will soon be seen in Shazam! playing the movie's villain, Doctor Sivana. However, this is the actor's second shot at playing a major role in a DC Comics superhero movie. Back in 2011 Strong played the role of Sinestro in the Ryan Reynolds-led Green Lantern. That movie was one of the few recent failures when it comes to superhero movies at the box office. If the movie had been a hit, we would have seen a lot more of Mark Strong in a sequel, but that movie never happened, something Mark Strong is still a bit upset about. According to the actor...

I loved Sinestro because I always thought if we can really manifest that guy, a look for that guy as he is in the comics, that would just be insane. I love the fact that he looked the way he did, and I really enjoyed it, and it was such a shame to me that movie didn't kick in, you know, because I thought that part was great.

When we meet Sinestro in Green Lantern, he's the leader of the Green Lantern Corps when Ryan Reynolds' Hal Jordan finds himself somewhat unwittingly drafted. In the end, Sinestro believes the only way to fight the villain Paralax is with the power of fear, and he has a power ring forged that gives him that power. In the post-credits scene of the movie, we see Sinestro putting on the yellow ring and its power seems to overwhelm him.

If a Green Lantern sequel had happened, we almost certainly would have seen Green Lantern's greatest enemy, Sinestro, take center stage. Clearly that was part of the plan for bringing Mark Strong in to play the role in the first place. You don't cast somebody like him in a simple supporting role.

Mark Strong was certainly on board for the long term plan. It sounds like he still is, as he tells ComicBook.com that's still bummed he didn't get a chance to play the part at the level he knew it was capable of.

While Green Lantern was certainly a movie with some issues. Few would lay any of the movies problems at the feel of Mark Strong. He was a perfectly good SInestro and probably would have been a fantastic villain if the sequel had ever actually happened.

It did not, but now Mark Strong will have his second bite at the comic book villain apple in the form of Doctor Sivana. He'll be the force opposing Zachary Levi/Asher Angel as Shazam. The trailers have largely kept our villain under wraps, so we don't really know what to expect, but we can pretty much always count on Mark Strong to bring the energy necessary to be a great comic book supervillain.

As far as the future of Green lantern goes, plans for a new Green Lantern film set within the DC film universe have been announced, but momentum on that project is either moving very slowly, or not at all, as we've heard little to indicate we'll be seeing a new Green Lantern anytime soon.

Navy Officials Defend Tom Cruise After 'Arrogant' Top Gun 2 Set Claims

Top Gun's Maverick is known for his need for speed, but Navy officials are shooting down rumors that he also needs better manners. Tom Cruise and company filmed some scenes for the Top Gun sequel Top Gun: Maverick aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt in San Diego. Reports recently spread that Cruise's behavior was seen by some sailors as arrogant, and a Navy official stepped in to defend the actor:

Tom Cruise and the cast were nothing but gracious and professional during filming to all of the sailors. Some sailors may have misinterpreted guidance from the Navy that told sailors to not approach actors while filming and not use cell phones on the set.

A Navy official defended Tom Cruise to NBC 7 after the news station was told by an anonymous servicemember that Cruise acted "very arrogant" and told them not to look at or touch him. That sailor added that Cruise "angered USS Theodore crew while filming."

However, Navy escorts who accompanied Tom Cruise through filming disputed that account:

At no time did Tom Cruise say to a sailor, 'Do not look at me. Do not touch me.'

Navy officials also said Tom Cruise took to the mic at a recent "all hands on deck" to personally thank the crew for their support of the film.

Several social media posts critical of Tom Cruise's on-set behavior were shared by The Scientology Money Project -- a news site dedicated to investigating the money, propaganda, and legal matters of Scientology, of which Cruise is a member. The site posted comments said to be from Navy sailors on the TR (names were redacted) with people calling out Cruise for allegedly telling the crew not to look at or talk to him during Top Gun 2 filming.

Not having been there myself, I don't know who said what to whom. It does seem like it could easily have been a misunderstanding. But if any U.S. Navy servicemembers really did feel disrespected, well, that's not good. It's not good in general, and it's not good for a movie set on their turf.

Paramount already had to step in and correct some previous Top Gun 2 chatter about production halting so Tom Cruise could learn to fly Navy fighter jets. Sources said Cruise couldn't fly the jets in question even if he wanted to, because civilians just aren't allowed to. But Cruise would be doing some flying in "certain aircrafts."

Top Gun: Maverick, directed by Joseph Kosinski, is currently scheduled for release on June 26, 2020. Paramount moved it from its previous release date of July 12, 2019.

Tom Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is back from the 1986 movie, now a captain and flight instructor. Val Kilmer is also back as Iceman, with Miles Teller as the son of Maverick's late partner Goose. Jennifer Connelly also joins the cast as a single mother who runs the local bar near the Navy base, and apparently she and Cruise reenact a version of the first film's motorcycle scene. The star-studded cast also includes Glen Powell, Jon Hamm, and Ed Harris. How Jay Baruchel Feels About Wrapping Up The How To Train Your Dragon Series

Almost a decade ago, How To Train Your Dragon flew into the lives of its fans, and the animation world was never the same. Now, with How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, that series will take its final bow, leaving a pretty big hole for some lucky new franchise to fill. No one is more aware of this than its star, Jay Baruchel, as he shared the following thoughts about closing out the chronicles of Hiccup to CinemaBlend:

It's crazy, man. I've kind of been preparing for a life post Hiccup. He's been such an intrinsic part of my life for, like you said, over a decade. It's kinda strange, I've never said goodbye to a character I've played this long before. So I'm not entirely sure how it'll all feel, but at least we're ending in the best way we could be ending.

These remarks were part of a longer conversation that CinemaBlend had with Baruchel during the New York Comic-Con press line for How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. After seeing some selected clips, as well as the new trailer that'll be coming to the internet on October 25, it's not hard to see where he's coming from. Setting up the series' grand finale, it was easy to get emotional over our latest look at the final adventure of Hiccup and Toothless.

Just like his on screen surrogate, Jay Baruchel has been through quite a few adventures in the shared worlds of dragon and man. In addition to three feature films, a handful of short features and 118 episodes of Dreamworks' Dragons on Cartoon Network, Baruchel has stuck with Hiccup, and Toothless throughout eight years of adventure and excitement. And from the clips of footage shown at the How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World panel, that bittersweet goodbye will definitely be felt by the fans.

In the footage shown that day, not only was the hidden world of the film's title shown off, but it was also implied that Toothless is, or will shortly be confirmed as, the king of the dragons. This naturally leaves Hiccup and Astrid as outsiders, and while they're amazed at the world shown off in How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Hiccup comes to the quick realization that it's probably the end of the line for him and his dragon friend.

You can see some of that footage yourself, as Dreamworks released a short clip that samples from not only the new trailer, but also some of the clips shown at the panel:

Speaking with Jay Baruchel, his gratitude for what How To Train Your Dragon has given him is readily apparent. At the same time, you can sense the beginnings of sadness, as two of the best friends in animated history are going to go their separate ways. We'll get to see what happens next a little sooner, as How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World has just been bumped up for a February 22, 2019 release date.
