New Mary Poppins Returns Image Teases An Awesome Musical Number

It's almost come time to continue the magical journey of Mary Poppins and the Banks family, with the holiday season's upcoming release of Mary Poppins Returns. Disney has been going down a long list of their classic films and remaking them, but director Rob Marshall insists this film isn't simply that. The sequel will resume 25 years after the events of the 1964 classic, as Mary Poppins, played by the delightful Emily Blunt, swings back down to Cherry Tree Lane to help bring optimism back into the Banks family's lives. The sequel takes place in the 1930s with Jane (played by Emily Mortimer) and Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) now as adults. After Michael, who has three children of his own, deals with a personal loss this musical number will no doubt cheer him up. The image has Mary Poppins being held up by two jolly men in caps, with a few more dancing in the background on lamp posts. The teaser for the upcoming release is in the midst of a musical number called "Trip a Little Light Fantastic," according to Entertainment Weekly, which will have Emily Blunt as Poppins and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack, dancing through the streets of London.

From the looks of the image, the performance of the new song will be reminiscent of "Step in Time" from the 1964 classic, where Bert's chimney sweep gang dance up and down rooftops with Mary and the Banks children in the elaborate number. But Jack is a lamplighter, so his friends are taking to lamp posts instead to make it a new dance number. Maybe Jane and Michael will accompany Mary Poppins and Jack for this glowing scene, to help them cheer up and learn a few more lessons from the magical nanny.

Mary Poppins Returns looks to be a welcome new Disney entry to follow the classic film starring Julie Andrews. A look at the beautiful teaser trailer brings an instant smile on the faces of those who grew up with the movie that has stood the test of time. The upcoming movie is staying with the gleeful tone of the first movie with callbacks to the original, with even Dick Van Dyke onboard. An impressive supporting cast including Meryl Streep as Topsy Turvy-Poppins and Angela Lansbury as Balloon Lady.

Songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman penned the new soundtrack of music for the cast to sing and dance to. Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda's exceptional singing voices have been unleashed in Into the Woods and the Broadway musical Hamilton but seeing them perform together when the film is released on December 19 will be a unique treat on its own.







It looks like we are in for some after-credits scenes, and it sounds like fans won't want to miss them. The movie also contains some subtext about toxic friendships in the age of the internet, so those worried that the sequel would just be a vehicle for (clever) jokes about the internet can rest easy.
