This Rotten Week: Predicting The Kid Who Would Be King And Serenity Reviews
We have two movies on tap this week, with a kid-centric return to Camelot, and a psychological thriller in which Matthew McConaughey gets to go into an intense brooding mode. Get ready for The Kid Who Would Be King and Serenity.
Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.
Judging a book by its cover, the premise of The Kid Who Would Be King is so silly that under normal circumstances there is little chance that I would anticipate a positive critical response. It's a story about a modern day kid finding Excalibur and leading fight against the evil Morgana and all sorts of baddies and evil things. There are more ways for this to go wrong than right.
Then again, the trailer had some highlights, with a few laughs here and there, and then you see Joe Cornish's name attached and all of a sudden we've got something cooking. Cornish helmed the immensely enjoyable Attack The Block (90%) while also helping to pen Ant-Man (82%) and The Adventures of Tintin (74%). It sure looks like he brought his skills to The Kid Who Would Be King, which has come out of the gate hot with critics. It's sitting at 89% with 28 reviews posted, and many writers are using words like "charming," "likable," and "refreshing". Thankfully early reviews will save my prediction because there's no way I'd have gone this high without them.
If movies have taught us anything, it's that when you want to get off the grid, the best thing to do is move to a remote-ish coastal town populated by a lot of other really good-looking people. I feel like I've seen some approximation of this scenario time and time again, and in Serenity we have Matthew McConaughey as a troubled soul whose ex-wife tracks down to kill her new husband.
The film trailer delivers some suspenseful moments, and the whole thing definitely has the feel of a flick that will keep you guessing. These can work out well with critics, though you do have to toe the line between creepy/intense and off-the-rails confusing. I suspect director Steven Knight mostly makes Serenity work, and it helps that the cast is superb - featuring Anne Hathaway, Djimon Hounsou, Diane Lane and Jason Clarke in the supporting cast. Still, there appears that there be enough confusing double-crossing that I wouldn't be surprised if some critics are turned off.
There was only one movie on the docket last week, and I was on target with my prediction. Admittedly the critics gave me a head start on Glass (Predicted: 33% Actual: 35%), with the early reviews trending negative. Things didn't improve much over the course of the week, and we are once again left wondering whether or not M. Night Shyamalan is actually a good filmmaker or not. After a run of stinkers, he bounced back with Split (76%) and The Visit (66%), but has now once again taken a dive off the critical cliff. It isn't a good look for the guy who's already so polarizing.
We'll be back next time around with Miss Bala. It's gonna be a Rotten Week!

Every Marvel Studios Movie, Ranked By CinemaBlend Readers
Earlier this month we took on a not-so-minor endeavor. Wanting to determine the true rankings of all of the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we not only polled the entire CinemaBlend staff asking them to order the films from best to worst, but we then had all of you lovely readers take on the same task. We released a survey on our site, promoted it on our HeroBlend podcast, and nearly a thousand of you did us the favor of responding which has led us to this moment.
We have tabulated the results of your submissions, and by taking a weighted average of all your responses we have put together this special ranking of every movie released by Marvel Studios so far. We have a special breakdown of both the bottom five and the top five featured in our latest episode of HeroBlend, which you can listen to right here:
But to get into the full list, keep on reading!
The Bottom Five22. The Incredible Hulk21. Thor: The Dark World20. Iron Man 219. Thor18. Iron Man 3
We were a bit surprised to see Kenneth Branaghs Thor wind up on this portion of this list (the CinemaBlend staff had it at #16), but really the rest of this didnt end up being shocking at all given that the four other titles all had the exact same rankings on our staff list. Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk is just kind of a muddled mess; Alan Taylor's Thor: The Dark World features what is unquestionably the weakest villain plot in all of the Marvel titles released thus far; Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2 notably just has too much going on; and not everyone really loved the big Mandarin twist in Shane Black's Iron Man 3 (or the fact that its much more of a Tony Stark movie than it is an Iron Man movie).
Whats particularly interesting about this grouping, though, is that all of the titles come from Marvel Studios first five years producing movies a.k.a. the period when the company was still figuring out the kinks of a cohesive, multi-tiered franchise that didnt include major characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men. Obviously that era also delivered us the first Iron Man as well as The Avengers, but still theres nobody out there who would argue that the brand hasnt come a long way since 2013.
The Middle Of The Pack17. Captain Marvel16. Ant-Man and Wasp15. Ant-Man14. Captain America: The First Avenger13. Avengers: Age Of Ultron12. Doctor Strange11. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
The middle of our CinemaBlend reader rankings is populated entirely by two kinds of Marvel Studios releases: origin stories and first sequels. Within the former category, fans apparently dont put Scott Derricksons Doctor Strange, Joe Johnstons Captain America: The First Avenger, Peyton Reeds Ant-Man, or Anna Boden and Ryan Flecks Captain Marvel as high on the shelf as some of the other Marvel releases of their ilk (which well get to in a second), but there is definitely appreciation for what they contribute to the universe. The CinemaBlend staff shows the first Captain America movie a bit more love than readers, as we put it at #11 on our averaged list, but mostly we seem to be in sync in this realm.
As for the first sequels, its interesting that most of them wound up ranking below their series predecessors on this list, with the lone exception being Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In many cases it can be hard for filmmakers to follow-up their own work, particularly when the first movie earned a lot of love and raised expectations. Its an interesting pattern to recognize when you realize that the upcoming Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is expected to include Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, and Doctor Strange 2 not to mention the fact that the next Marvel release is set to be the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home.
The Top Ten10. Spider-Man: Homecoming9. Black Panther8. Iron Man7. Guardians of the Galaxy6. The Avengers5. Thor: Ragnarok4. Captain America: Civil War3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier2. Avengers: Infinity War1. Avengers: Endgame
If anyone out there is looking for evidence of fan appreciation for the contributions that Joe and Anthony Russo have made to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you need look no further than the results of our survey. All four movies that the brothers have directed for the franchise landed in the top spots here, with the most gratitude being expressed towards the absolutely massive Avengers blockbusters that were released in the last two years. It was clearly a ridiculously huge endeavor to take on, but the best word to describe the results of the execution is beloved.
All of you also showed a tremendous amount of love for Taika Waititis Thor: Ragnarok which has a ranking that arrives in sharp relief compared to its predecessors in the God of Thunder series and even after 11 years people are still showing Jon Favreaus Iron Man the respect it deserves. Clearly there is also a lot of love for the more modern franchise-starters, with Jon Watts Spider-Man: Homecoming, Ryan Cooglers Black Panther and James Gunns Guardians of the Galaxy all earning spots on the Top 10, and all of us will certainly never forget the game changer that was Joss Whedons The Avengers.
How did these final results wind up comparing with your own submissions to our survey? Is there any film that you personally love and now feel is totally underrated? Do you think there is any movie in the franchise that gets way more praise than it actually deserves? Hit the comments section below, and tell us what you think of this vox populi ranking - and, as always, be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend for all of the latest news, updates, features, and reviews of Marvel Cinematic Universe releases!

No, Dave Bautista Wasn't Going To Quit Guardians 3 To Do The Suicide Squad
The comic book genre is the most popular in the film world, with loads of talented actors and filmmakers joining cinematic universes. And superhero blockbusters have become so common that certain actors have had roles in multiple comic book properties. Josh Brolin, Peter Dinklage, and Chris Evans have all done this type of work, and for a while it seemed Guardians actor Dave Bautista was jumping over to DC for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.
During the months between James Gunn's firing and eventual reinstatement as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he inked a deal with Warner Bros. to bring The Suicide Squad to theaters. Bautista was a staunch defender of Gunn during this time, and for a while it looked like he might be abandoning the role of Drax to join Gunn's DC project. Now the wrestler turned actor has clarified his intentions, saying:
No, it wasn't that I was going to jump ship and do Suicide Squad. I was more at the point where I was like, 'Fire me. I don't care. You're going to hear what I have to say.' And this is the way I feel and I think you made a bad call and I don't care if you fire me because I feel this way. This is me being honest and me sticking up for my friend who was wronged.' So that was it. It wasn't about me -- I'm not threatening to go do Suicide Squad, but I was just saying, 'If things aren't here, I'm just going to leave. I don't want to be a part of this.'
Dave Bautista has been open about his loyalty to James Gunn, especially in the months where Guardians 3 was on hold and the director was out of the public eye. And it appears he wanted to puff up his chest a bit and make his feelings known while Marvel Studios figured out what to do for the upcoming Guardians threequel.
Dave Bautista's comments to ET shed a light on what was really going as the James Gunn situation slowly played out. Gunn's departure from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 seemingly put the entire franchise in jeopardy, as the movies are extremely tied to his perspective and sense of humor. Finding a replacement for Gunn seemed nearly impossible, and Bautista was open about his disappointment with the situation.

The entire Guardians cast united shortly after James Gunn was fired, penning a letter in solidarity with their director. Bautista was one of the names on that note, but he also made a few other public comments about the situation. What's more, he seemingly threatened to quit Guardians 3 if Gunn's original draft of the script was used.
Despite rumors about Dave Bautista possibly playing Bane in The Suicide Squad, he hasn't officially joined the developing DC blockbuster. And now that James Gunn has been rehired to complete the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, the actor seems to have buried the hatchet with Marvel Studios. So we'll just have to see how Gunn's upcoming superhero movies end up.
Dave Bautista is in theaters now for Avengers: Endgame, and CinemaBlend will keep you updated on Guardians and Suicide Squad news as details become public. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
